A late night fire tore through a bedroom on Hyatt Avenue in Yonkers on Sunday, sending a man to the hospital with burns but leaving him expected to recover, according to fire officials.
Fire crews rushed to the house in southern Westchester after a report of a blaze and found flames centered in a bedroom. Officials said one man suffered burns to the top of his head before firefighters knocked the fire down. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to be OK, as reported by News 12.
Why smoke alarms matter
Bedroom fires can spread fast and are especially dangerous because they often start when people are asleep, cutting the time available to escape. The U.S. Fire Administration advises installing smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home so residents get as much early warning as possible. For detailed guidance on choosing, placing and maintaining alarms, see the U.S. Fire Administration.
Investigation and next steps
Officials said the cause of the Hyatt Avenue fire has not yet been determined and no official ruling has been released. Yonkers fire investigators are examining the scene to pinpoint where and how the blaze started. News 12 reports that the department has confirmed the fire originated in a bedroom and that the injured man sustained burns to the top of his head. City officials have not provided additional details.
