An early-morning crash on eastbound Interstate 10 in Phoenix spun from traffic trouble into a violent crime investigation, with three people now facing multiple charges after what troopers describe as an armed robbery near State Route 51.
Troopers were called out shortly after 2:10 a.m. on Jan. 19 and found that one of the vehicles involved had left the scene. Several people from that car allegedly held others at gunpoint and took items from their vehicle, according to investigators.
Suspects Identified And Arrested
Detectives later identified 18-year-olds Jeremiah E. Davis and Robert T. Gilbert, along with a 17-year-old girl, as the suspects, according to Arizona's Family. Investigators told the outlet that additional armed robbery charges were recommended against Davis on Feb. 17 after authorities learned he was already being held at the Maricopa County jail on unrelated charges.
Gilbert was arrested on Feb. 18, and the juvenile suspect was taken into custody afterward, Arizona's Family reports.
What Investigators Say
The Department of Public Safety assigned the case to its Major Crimes District as detectives continued digging into what happened, according to Arizona's Family. In a written statement, DPS said the arrests "underscore the AZDPS Major Crimes District’s commitment to thorough investigative work" and emphasized that authorities aim to hold people accused of violent crimes accountable.
Freeway Crime Context
Crimes along Valley freeways have sparked major investigations and public anxiety before. The I-10 "freeway shootings" in 2015 drew statewide attention and triggered multiagency responses, as reported by ABC15. Authorities say complicated cases involving weapons are often handed to specialized units such as DPS' Major Crimes District to handle evidence work and coordination with prosecutors.
Charges And Next Steps
At the time of reporting, it was not yet clear whether the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office had formally filed charges. Detectives had forwarded their recommendations while the investigation continued. Prosecutors are expected to review the evidence before deciding on potential felony armed robbery counts, and the juvenile suspect’s case may move through a separate process because of her age.
