Traffic on a remote stretch of Interstate 10 in West Texas turned into a crime scene Wednesday after authorities say a vehicle fled a Border Patrol checkpoint, then opened fire on officers before the pursuit ended near Kent.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Texas Rangers swarmed the area, shutting down the highway in both directions while investigators documented the officer-involved shooting. Drivers were urged to steer clear, and lengthy backups stacked up in the wide-open desert as the investigation unfolded.
By later in the day, DPS said there was no longer a threat to the public and promised more details would be released. For now, officials are keeping a tight lid on most of the specifics while evidence is collected and reviewed.
What Happened
In a post on X, the Texas Department of Public Safety's South Texas Region said troopers and Rangers responded after "a suspect vehicle fled from the Sierra Blanca checkpoint and opened fire on responding law enforcement." TxDPS - South Texas Region said investigators were on scene and would release additional information when it becomes available.
Pursuit Ended Near Kent, Outlet Reports
Local and national outlets reported the pursuit continued east on I-10 and ended near Kent after law enforcement used a PIT maneuver. As reported by KVIA, which carried a CNN Newsource dispatch, officers then ordered the driver out of the vehicle before an officer returned fire, fatally striking the driver. It was unclear which agency fired the fatal shot.
Why The Sierra Blanca Checkpoint Matters
The Sierra Blanca checkpoint sits roughly 90 miles east of El Paso and, in January, was outfitted with a semi-autonomous vehicle barrier intended to prevent high-speed flights from the inspection lanes. The installation and its purpose were described in a report by the World Border Security Congress.
Investigation And Next Steps
The Texas Rangers and DPS troopers were involved in on-scene work and will coordinate follow-up investigations with local authorities, officials said. The Office of the Attorney General collects and publishes data on peace officer-involved shootings in Texas, and its 2024 annual report outlines the reporting process and statewide counts, which will guide how agencies document these incidents.
TxDPS warned motorists to avoid the stretch of I-10 around Kent while the scene was active, and lengthy delays were reported in both directions. Travelers in West Texas should keep an eye on official statements and traffic feeds until authorities fully clear the roadway.
Officials said they would release additional details as the investigation continues. Hoodline will monitor public statements and filings for updates.
