Traffic through downtown Pueblo turned into a slow crawl Tuesday after a crash shut down Interstate 25 in both directions at Exit 99A (CO‑96/6th Street), forcing drivers onto a detour and clogging nearby streets.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, “I-25 northbound/southbound: road closed due to a crash at exit 99a - co 96; 6th street. slower speeds advised, detour in place.” The alert went out on X as emergency crews worked the scene and traffic was rerouted around the closure.
Detours and delays
Drivers are being routed off the interstate and onto local streets around the 6th Street/CO‑96 interchange, which are expected to stay busy while the closure is in effect. Motorists are urged to follow posted detour signs and check real‑time conditions at COtrip or by calling 511 before heading into the area.
What drivers should do
Anyone traveling through Pueblo should allow extra time, slow down, and follow directions from emergency personnel and detour markers. Officials advise avoiding the area if possible until I‑25 is fully reopened, and monitoring official channels for updates on lane reopenings and any additional travel advisories.
