On Monday, March 9, a routine afternoon in the River City Marketplace parking lot turned tense when a toddler was discovered locked inside a parked vehicle with the keys still in the car. Two Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office patrol officers rushed to the scene and, as video shows, worked fast to free the child and return the youngster to their mother without apparent injury.
According to Spot On Florida, which collected video from First Coast News, the station’s clip captures the officers quickly sizing up the situation before moving in with tools to get the doors open and pull the toddler out safely.
How officers freed the child
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office identified the responding officers as Shawn Crocker and Phil Massicotte and said they arrived within minutes after the call for help. As reported by Action News Jax, the child had unbuckled himself but could not open the doors from inside, so the officers used specialized tools to unlock the vehicle. The toddler was reunited with the mother in roughly ten minutes, JSO said.
Why the danger is real
The sheriff’s office used the video as a warning to shoppers that even short stretches in a parked car can be dangerous, especially in Florida heat. Federal safety guidance shows a vehicle’s interior can climb nearly 20 degrees in about 10 minutes, and children’s bodies heat three to five times faster than adults’, making even brief entrapment risky, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Authorities urge anyone who sees a child alone in a vehicle to call 911 right away.
