Joseph "Joe" Duggar, 31, a former face of TLC's "19 Kids and Counting," has been arrested and charged after a 14-year-old reported that he sexually abused her when she was 9 during a 2020 family vacation in Panama City Beach, Florida. Bay County investigators say Duggar was taken into custody out of state and is awaiting extradition to Bay County to face charges of lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim younger than 12 and lewd and lascivious conduct by a person 18 or older. Authorities say the case kicked off on March 18, when a Tontitown, Arkansas, detective alerted Bay County and the girl later took part in a forensic interview.
As reported by WBAL NewsRadio, Duggar was booked into the Washington County, Arkansas, jail on March 18 and remains in custody while officials work out the logistics of sending him to Florida. Bay County authorities have charged him with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 12 and lewd and lascivious conduct by a person 18 or older.
What investigators say
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office says the alleged abuse happened in 2020 while Duggar and the girl’s family were staying at a residence on Danny Drive in Panama City Beach. According to the sheriff’s announcement and local reporting, cited by PEOPLE, the girl told a forensic interviewer that Duggar repeatedly asked her to sit on his lap, then covered both of them with a blanket and "manipulated her underwear," grazed her genitals and rubbed her thighs.
Investigators say the girl’s father confronted Duggar on March 17 and that Duggar admitted the conduct to the father and later to Tontitown detectives.
Legal implications
Under Florida law, lewd or lascivious molestation of a child under 12 by a person 18 or older is a life felony, which carries some of the toughest penalties on the books. The offense and its potential sentencing range are detailed in state statute s.800.04, as outlined by the Florida Senate. Prosecutors are expected to rely on those statutes if the case proceeds in Bay County court.
Family context and next steps
PEOPLE reports that Bay County officials have not released a timetable for Duggar’s extradition and that both the sheriff’s office and Duggar’s representatives were contacted for comment. The arrest adds fresh scrutiny to the Duggar family, whose public image has already taken major hits. Joseph’s older brother, Josh Duggar, was convicted in 2021 on federal child‑pornography charges and later sentenced to more than a decade in prison.
