The County of Kaua‘i’s Department of Parks and Recreation is rolling out a hefty slate of upgrades across the island, from new skateparks in Hanapēpē and Nāwiliwili to a multimillion-dollar overhaul of Vidinha Stadium and a modernization push at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall. The work touches almost every corner of local recreation life, with resurfaced play courts, updated comfort stations, accessibility improvements and expanded youth programming all in the mix. County officials frame the effort as a way to keep keiki active while making older facilities safer, sturdier and more useful for communities islandwide.
Skateparks Lined Up For Hanapēpē And Nāwiliwili
Open-house outreach held in December 2024 gathered community feedback on skatepark concepts at Hanapēpē Town Park and Nāwiliwili Beach Park, according to County of Kaua‘i. That outreach identified Dreamland Skateparks and Kaua‘i Skate ʻOhana as partners, and the county’s FY 2025 capital-improvement program spells out $838,726 for a lighted skatepark and pickleball elements at Nāwiliwili and Hanapēpē. With that funding line in place, the projects appear to have moved from talk into the design and permitting stages.
Vidinha Stadium Renovation Targets New Track And Fresh Turf
Vidinha Stadium was closed for a major renovation in 2025 as part of a $12.2 million project that removed the existing field and installed synthetic turf, a new synthetic track and a video board, according to a County of Kaua‘i press release. “This project would not have been possible without the collaboration of the County Council, State legislators, the Hawai‘i Department of Education, Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation, our dedicated County staff and contractors,” Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami said in the release. A recent Facebook reel from the county showcased the construction work and noted that the upgrades could allow Kaua‘i to host state track meets once everything is complete.
Comfort Stations, Courts And Convention Hall Get Their Turn
The county’s capital plan also flags islandwide playcourt resurfacing, new playground equipment and comfort-station upgrades, signaling a back-to-basics push to improve the everyday park experience along with accessibility. The CIP includes a line item for Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall improvements, and budget documents from the mayor’s office indicate the county sought federal help to repair the convention hall roof. Taken together, those pieces point to a multi-year effort aimed at bringing aging civic facilities up to current ADA and safety standards rather than letting them limp along.
Youth Programs And Leagues Still At The Center
The Parks Department is not just pouring concrete and laying turf. Its Summer Fun camps, seasonal sports leagues and youth golf sessions continue to serve keiki across the island and keep facilities busy. Registration notices and program pages from the county list Summer Fun sites and session dates, and the Wailua Golf Pro Shop runs the department’s youth golf sessions for ages 7 to 15, underscoring the county’s investment in organized recreation and skill-building for young residents.
How Residents Can Follow The Timeline
Residents can keep tabs on construction schedules, open-house notices and permitting updates through the Department of Parks & Recreation’s web page and by signing up for county alerts. The parks page lays out neighborhood centers and permit contacts around Kaua‘i, while county press releases and CIP documents supply project timelines and media contacts for specific questions.
For Kaua‘i residents watching from the sidelines, the next several months will show how fast drawings and budget lines turn into new ramps, fresh courts and upgraded stadium amenities. County officials say the mix of community input and public funding is intended to leave the island with more accessible, safer and better-equipped places to play.
