A hallway fight at Island Creek Village in Duxbury on March 26 turned into a serious criminal case after police say they pulled a large butcher knife and suspected narcotics off one of the men involved. Duxbury police say officers were called that evening to the sprawling apartment complex on a report of two men fighting in a hallway. At the scene, a woman told officers that, moments earlier, a man had pressed a knife to her throat inside her apartment, as per Newport Dispatch.
When officers frisked the suspect, they reported finding assorted pills, two prescription bottles that did not bear his name, drug paraphernalia, and another bag containing benzodiazepines and about 28 grams of a white powder. Police said the powder field-tested positive for cocaine.
As reported by Newport Dispatch, the man was booked on multiple counts, including assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery (domestic), assault and battery, disturbing the peace, possession of a Class B substance (subsequent), possession of a Class E substance (subsequent), and trafficking in cocaine. Officers seized the butcher knife as evidence and determined that the other man involved in the hallway confrontation had been acting in self-defense, according to the outlet.
What the charges mean
Under Massachusetts controlled substances law, trafficking in cocaine is treated as an aggravated felony, with penalties that depend heavily on both the drug class and the quantity involved. The statutory framework that lays out trafficking and related offenses appears in Massachusetts General Laws, which governs prosecution and sentencing for these cases.
Where the incident unfolded
The disturbance unfolded inside Island Creek Village, a large rental complex that town planning materials list at roughly 214 units, placing the confrontation in a densely populated setting. The development at 30 Tremont Street is identified in Town of Duxbury documents, a reminder of why police say they moved quickly on a report of a hallway fight involving a knife.
Duxbury police detained the suspect at the scene, seized the knife and suspected drugs, and arrested him on the full slate of charges. Police say the seized substances are expected to be sent for laboratory confirmation, and prosecutors will review the case once testing is complete. As Newport Dispatch notes, officers concluded that one of the men was acting in self-defense and did not identify anyone as being seriously injured.
Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the Duxbury Police Department.
