A two-hour pre-dawn standoff on Henderlite Street ended with a 40-year-old man in custody early Wednesday after police say a domestic assault escalated into a tense negotiation and a juvenile trapped inside a Salisbury home. Investigators report that a woman and her son suffered non-life-threatening knife wounds before the suspect surrendered without further violence and was taken to the Rowan County Detention Center.
According to a press release from the Salisbury Police Department, officers were called to the 200 block of Henderlite Street around 3:45 a.m. Officials identified the suspect as 40-year-old Eugene D. Nolan and say he is charged with felony kidnapping and multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and is being held without bond. The department noted there is no ongoing threat to the community, and Police Chief PJ Smith credited officers for their “patience, professionalism, and sound judgment throughout this incident.” For media inquiries, the release lists Lt. J. Moreau at (980) 892-9914.
Neighbors woke up to flashing lights and frantic knocks as family members tried to get help. As reported by WSOC, a relative said the injured woman ran to her grandmother’s house and told reporters that Nolan had been staying with the family after meeting the granddaughter in a TikTok group. That account states the granddaughter suffered a cut to the back of her neck that required stitches, and that the family’s teen son was also cut.
Negotiators And Special Response Team
The Salisbury Police Department Special Response Team responded to the home, backed up by negotiators from both Salisbury police and the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, according to the department’s release. Officers spent roughly two hours talking with Nolan, ultimately securing the safe release of the juvenile inside the house before Nolan surrendered peacefully to authorities.
Charges And Custody
Authorities booked Nolan on felony kidnapping and multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon, then transported him to the Rowan County Detention Center, where he remains held without bond. Local reporting by WSOC also notes that Nolan is from Maryland, was released from prison in 2022, and is listed as a registered sex offender; police did not provide any of that background in their official release.
Investigators say the case is still active and are asking anyone with additional information to contact law enforcement. Salisbury police also thanked nearby residents for their patience while officers worked to bring the volatile situation under control.
