A 53-year-old woman died Sunday at Lake Eufaula after she went under while trying to help two children in the water, according to authorities. She was pulled from the 9 South swim area and taken to McAlester Regional Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol marine unit responded to the scene and is investigating the incident.
According to News On 6, which cited the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the woman has been identified as 53-year-old Robecca Garrett. Troopers told the outlet that Garrett went under while trying to help two children at the "9 South" swim area on the lake. She was transported to McAlester Regional Hospital and pronounced dead there, the report states.
OHP response and recent calls
Troopers from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol's marine division have been called to Lake Eufaula multiple times this spring, responding to search-and-rescue efforts and near-drowning incidents. KJRH reported an OHP response to a separate Lake Eufaula incident earlier this month, underscoring how frequently emergency crews are being sent to the lake.
Lake Eufaula hazards and safety measures
Lake Eufaula is Oklahoma's largest reservoir, with about 105,500 surface acres, and its varying depths, currents and heavy boat traffic can make swim areas unpredictable. According to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, U.S. Army Corps rangers and state troopers manage popular swim beaches and regularly issue guidance for safe lake use.
Investigation and safety reminders
Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers continue to investigate the drowning, and officials have not released further information about the circumstances. According to News On 6, troopers urged careful supervision of children around the water and the use of life jackets at public swim areas.
