Asher's Bar & Grill, a new sports-bar concept from a pair of local hospitality veterans, is getting ready to move into the former Chilango space across from Bde Maka Ska. The ground-floor spot inside the Beach Club Residences is being built out as a game-watching hub with chef-driven comfort food and accessible prices. The name is a family tribute, honoring owner Zach Sussman’s late great-uncle and his son, both named Asher.

According to The Minnesota Star Tribune, Asher's is taking over 2730 W. Lake St. and is aiming to open to the public the week of April 20. Sussman told the paper he wants the spot to feel “kind of a Cheers, a comfortable, approachable, fun neighborhood hangout.”

Owners and operators Zach Sussman and Farzad Freshtekhu helm Good Times Hospitality, which lists Asher's as a spring 2026 project and describes it as a contemporary sports bar overlooking Lake Bde Maka Ska. The group says the buildout is centered on an approachable, value-forward menu and neighborhood-focused programming designed to appeal to regulars as much as game-day crowds.

Comfort Food, Cocktails, and Game-Day Staples

Executive chef Matt St. Germaine and general manager Aaron Palm are putting together a lineup of soups, salads, handhelds, and comfort-style mains, with most entrees expected to land around 16 to 17 dollars and a stated goal of keeping nothing over 30 dollars. A preview from The Minnesota Star Tribune notes a Reuben built on pastrami smoked for 16 hours, a pot roast braised in a house stout and served over cheese grits, and desserts that include a pistachio tres leches as a nod to the space’s Chilango chapter. Cocktails are slated to mostly hover near 13 dollars, beers will cover international, national, and local labels, and the team plans to roll out brunch at a later date.

Screen Time and Lakeside Seating

The refreshed ground floor will feature sports memorabilia, a pull-tab booth, and booth seating that runs along the windows facing the lake. In the back, the dining area known as the garden room will double as a private event space. The layout is geared toward serious channel surfing, with 14 screens ranging from roughly 60 to 96 inches, so different groups can follow multiple games under one roof.

Uptown Turnover and Who Came Before

The new bar is sliding into a busy stretch of Uptown restaurant turnover. It replaces Chilango, which shut down last fall after roughly a year and a half in the space. Before that, the address was home to Urban Eatery for about 13 years. Eater Twin Cities documented Chilango’s planned early-October 2025 closure during a wave of local bar and restaurant exit announcements.

Opening Timeline and Parking Details

Asher's own site currently lists the concept as "Opening Spring 2026" and offers a contact form for press and event inquiries. For anyone planning ahead, the Beach Club building includes a connected guest parking ramp that is free with validation and is accessed from Thomas Avenue off Lake Street.
