Chicago’s public school students are getting a little more summer in their future. The Chicago Board of Education has signed off on academic calendars for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 school years that move the first day of class into late August, stretch out summer break, and keep the first semester ending after winter vacation. K–12 students will begin the 2026–27 year the week of Aug. 24, with pre‑K classes starting one day later, and the school year will close in early June. District leaders say the final plans reflect thousands of community responses and are designed to balance instructional time with the challenge of a late Labor Day in both years.
What the calendars set
According to Chicago Public Schools, the 2026–27 K–12 first day is Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, with pre‑K beginning Aug. 25. The K–12 year ends June 11, 2027, while pre‑K wraps up June 10. For 2027–28, the district calendar lists K–12 starting Aug. 23, 2027, and running through June 9, 2028, with pre‑K beginning Aug. 24, 2027, and ending June 8, 2028. CPS has posted downloadable family calendars and PDF versions with the complete schedules for parents and schools.
Why the district made the change
As Chalkbeat reported, district officials said that because Labor Day falls late in both 2026 and 2027, it would be difficult for high school students to finish required semester credits before winter break. Instead, the first semester will conclude after winter recess, and students will have roughly three weeks once they return to complete the term. Appointed board member Anusha Thotakura told Chalkbeat, “The No. 1 concern I hear from students is about mental health.” Chalkbeat also noted that a winter survey of roughly 22,000 respondents showed a majority preferred ending the semester after the break.
Days, breaks, and what families should note
Both calendars feature 176 student attendance days along with four Teacher Institute days, four School Improvement days, two parent‑teacher conference days, and four professional development days, according to WTTW. The district said it gathered more than 36,000 responses across two surveys to shape the decision and kept spring break dates aligned between the two years, something families repeatedly highlighted as important, per reporting by NBC Chicago. In practice, the new setup means slightly longer summers in 2026 and 2027 and shifts some final exams and semester activities into the weeks following winter recess.
Where to find the calendars
Full family calendars, printable PDFs, and school‑level versions are available on the district calendar page at Chicago Public Schools.
