A pedestrian was killed Monday night when a Brightline train struck them along the tracks in Deerfield Beach, authorities said. The collision happened at about 9:12 p.m. in the area of Northeast Eller Street and Second Avenue, and first responders pronounced the person dead at the scene. Broward Sheriff’s Office investigators are still working to determine what led up to the crash, and the victim has not yet been publicly identified.
According to Local 10, deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews arrived to find a person who had been hit by the train. Detectives were interviewing witnesses and combing through the area as they began piecing together a timeline of what happened.
Broward Sheriff’s Office Investigating
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit typically leads investigations into train-related deaths and reviews train data, crossing equipment and any available surveillance footage. Earlier Broward Sheriff’s Office releases on previous Brightline collisions in Deerfield Beach show the agency often examines whether safety systems were working properly at the time. Detectives have not yet released any details about the status of the crossing at Eller Street and Second Avenue in this case.
Brightline Safety Record And Local Steps
Brightline’s corridor has seen a disproportionate number of pedestrian and vehicle collisions since service began, according to an earlier investigation by the Associated Press. In response, regional agencies and Brightline have added safety upgrades, including extra gates, more signage and a county-wide quiet zone, as documented by the Broward MPO. Even with those changes, residents and safety advocates say more physical barriers and ongoing public outreach are needed to cut down on trespassing and risky crossings along the tracks.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office said it will release additional findings as the investigation continues and will update the public when appropriate. This story will be updated when officials provide more information.
