A late-night walk along Georgesville Road in west Columbus turned deadly Sunday when a vehicle struck a pedestrian who was pushing a shopping cart, according to city police. The person was walking in a northbound lane just south of Hall Road when a vehicle hit them from behind. First responders took the victim to Doctors West Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where they were pronounced dead at 11:29 p.m. Crews shut down lanes while investigators worked the scene.
What police say
As reported by 10TV, Columbus police said the vehicle was a Ford Fusion that struck the back of the pedestrian in the northbound lane. The impact threw the person into a utility pole, and the driver stayed at the scene. Police say the crash is still under investigation and they have not yet released the victim's name or additional details.
Investigation ongoing
Investigators with the Columbus Division of Police accident unit are examining the area to determine factors such as lighting, vehicle speed, and whether impairment played any role. Officers have not announced any charges at this time.
Georgesville Road and pedestrian safety
Georgesville Road is included in regional plans for pedestrian and shared-use path upgrades, reflecting long-running safety concerns along stretches of the corridor. Per MORPC, a Georgesville Road shared-use path project is in recent planning rounds, with funding and construction phased across fiscal years.
