Late night gunfire outside 435 East 102 Street has NYPD investigators turning to the public for help, after a person fired multiple shots on March 11 at about 11:00 p.m. and then took off. The individual is wanted on a reckless endangerment charge, according to an update shared on March 30 by NYPD Crime Stoppers.
The March 30 bulletin from NYPD Crime Stoppers includes several still images that investigators say may help identify the person they are looking for, and urges anyone who recognizes the individual to speak up.
According to the NYPD, anyone with information can call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or the Spanish line at 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Tips can also be submitted online through NYPD Crime Stoppers or by sending a direct message to the department's tip account on X at @NYPDTips.
What Reckless Endangerment Means in New York
Police have described the case as reckless endangerment, a charge in New York that can range from a class A misdemeanor in the second degree to a class D felony in the first degree, depending on what happened. As outlined by New York Penal Law, second degree involves conduct that creates a substantial risk of serious physical injury, while first degree covers conduct that shows a depraved indifference to human life.
What Investigators Are Not Saying Yet
The Crime Stoppers appeal does not identify the person in the photos or state whether anyone was struck in the shooting, according to NYPD Crime Stoppers. Investigators say they will review tips submitted through the hotline, online portal and social media and will follow up as leads come in.
Crime Stoppers also runs a mobile app and emphasizes that tipsters can remain anonymous. Tips that lead to an arrest or indictment may qualify for a cash reward, the NYPD notes. Per the NYPD, both the app and the hotline are central to the department's push to collect anonymous information in violent cases.
