An early Friday walk across a marked Miami crosswalk turned deadly when an SUV slammed into a pedestrian and then took off, police said.
City of Miami police and Fire Rescue crews were called to the intersection of Northwest 12th Avenue and 28th Street around 3:30 a.m. The victim was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center, where he later died, according to investigators. Police said nearby surveillance cameras captured the impact.
Surveillance video from the area shows the pedestrian being struck while using the marked crosswalk, according to WSVN. Investigators described the vehicle involved as an SUV that did not stop and said they are reviewing footage in an effort to identify the driver.
Where It Happened
The crash took place on a stretch of Northwest 12th Avenue that county transportation planners have already flagged for safety upgrades. Miami‑Dade's 2024 Vision Zero Action Plan lists Northwest 12th Avenue among corridors with a history of serious crashes and pedestrian injuries and prioritizes engineering and enforcement projects on similar routes, according to Miami‑Dade's Vision Zero Action Plan.
Police Appeal for Tips
Detectives are now leaning on the public for help. Miami police are asking anyone with information to call 305‑603‑6640 or Miami‑Dade Crime Stoppers at 305‑471‑TIPS, where tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000, according to WSVN.
Investigators have urged nearby business owners and drivers who were in the area around the time of the crash to check surveillance and dash‑cam footage from the early morning hours for any sign of the SUV or its driver.
Legal Consequences
Florida law requires any driver involved in a crash that causes injury or death to stop and remain at the scene, and willful failure to do so in a crash that results in death is a felony, according to the Florida Statutes.
If investigators are able to identify a suspect in this case, prosecutors could pursue felony leaving‑the‑scene charges depending on the evidence.
