Gunfire tore through a vehicle on the 4400 block of Auburn Boulevard just after midnight Sunday, killing a woman and sending a man to the hospital, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. Deputies arrived to find the man injured and the woman unresponsive; she was pronounced dead at the scene while he was taken to a hospital for treatment. Homicide detectives and crime-scene teams stayed on the block into the morning as the investigation got under way.
Deputies were called out shortly after midnight and located both victims, with the man transported for medical care and the woman declared deceased on site, KCRA reported. The outlet noted that, as of its report, officials had not released any suspect information and were directing anyone with tips to the sheriff's non-emergency line.
Investigators at the Scene
"Multiple witnesses were on scene, as well as CSI and Homicide Investigators," the sheriff's office said, quoted by KCRA. Detectives processed the vehicle and surrounding area and collected evidence as part of an active homicide investigation.
Auburn Boulevard's Recent Incidents
Auburn Boulevard has seen other shootings and major police responses in recent years. In April 2024, one person was detained after a shooting near the Watt Avenue interchange, CBS Sacramento reported. The corridor is a busy north Sacramento route where officers routinely respond to violent calls and traffic collisions.
How to Help
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to call its non-emergency line at 916-874-5115 or submit tips online, per the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. Witnesses who may have video or dash-cam footage are urged to contact investigators so the material can be reviewed as possible evidence.
Authorities say the investigation remains active and that updates will be released as detectives develop leads. This is a developing story.
