Colorado’s dining scene is officially on a heater. Five local talents from Denver and the Western Slope have been named finalists for the James Beard Foundation’s 2026 Restaurant and Chef Awards, cutting across both kitchen and beverage categories. The roster features Penelope Wong of Yuan Wonton, Johnny Curiel of Alma Fonda Fina, Josh Niernberg of Bin 707 Foodbar, Ryan Fletter of Barolo Grill, and Yacht Club co-owners McLain Hedges and Mary Allison Wright. It is the latest chapter in a growing streak of national attention for Colorado restaurants and bars.
The James Beard Foundation released its official list of nominees on March 31, with winners scheduled to be announced at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on June 15, according to the James Beard Foundation.
How Colorado Stacked Up
The strong finalist showing did not come out of nowhere. Back in January, 17 Colorado chefs, restaurants, and bar professionals landed on the semifinalist list, the highest number the state has ever put forward in a single year, as reported by Westword. That deep bench of semifinalists set the table for today’s finalist lineup, with Denver’s cocktail programs and Grand Junction’s Bin 707 stepping into the national spotlight.

Colorado’s 2026 James Beard finalists cover both sides of the pass and the bar:
Josh Niernberg is a finalist for Outstanding Chef for his work at Bin 707 Foodbar in Grand Junction. In Denver, Ryan Fletter is up for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service for Barolo Grill, while McLain Hedges and Mary Allison Wright are finalists for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service for Yacht Club. Rounding out the list, Johnny Curiel of Alma Fonda Fina and Penelope Wong of Yuan Wonton are both finalists in the Best Chef: Mountain category. All five appear on the James Beard Foundation’s official finalists list, according to the James Beard Foundation.
What To Watch In Chicago
When the awards are handed out in Chicago, Colorado’s beverage talent could be one of the big storylines. Fletter’s sommelier work at Barolo Grill and the inventive cocktail program at Yacht Club have pushed Denver’s drink scene into national view. On the Western Slope, Niernberg brings a Grand Junction perspective to the Outstanding Chef conversation and previously reached James Beard finalist status in 2025, per CBS Colorado. Winners will be named on June 15 in Chicago, and any victories for this crew would extend Colorado’s recent surge of national recognition in the restaurant world.
