A 21-year-old man is behind bars after Morgan Hill police say a 12-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by someone she met through social media. The report first came in on February 12, and detectives spent the following weeks piecing together what happened before seeking an arrest warrant, according to police.
Investigators identified the suspect as Alexis Javier Mendez‑Gallardo of Freedom, California. He was later found in Watsonville, where officers took him into custody. Police say the case remains active and are asking anyone with information to contact them.
How Police Say the Case Unfolded
According to a Morgan Hill Police Department post, detectives learned that the girl and the suspect had been communicating on Snapchat. Investigators say Mendez‑Gallardo arranged to pick the child up at her home in Morgan Hill, and the alleged assault followed that contact.
In the same post, the department urged parents and guardians to keep a close eye on kids’ online lives and to talk with them about the risks of chatting with strangers on social apps. Detectives say they ultimately secured an arrest warrant based on their investigation. The social media post also lists the detective assigned to the case's contact details.
Arrest and Charges
With an arrest warrant in hand, Morgan Hill detectives, assisted by Watsonville police, located Mendez‑Gallardo on March 4 and took him into custody. He was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on multiple felony counts, including rape of a child under 14, oral copulation of a child under 14, sexual penetration of a child under 14, lewd or lascivious acts with a minor, and arranging to meet a minor for lewd purposes, as reported by KSBW.
Police did not immediately release information about the arraignment or bail. The suspect is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
Online Risks and Wider Trends
Child-safety advocates and law-enforcement task forces say cases like this increasingly start in private messages on social and messaging apps, which can make evidence harder to track. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has recorded large numbers of CyberTipline reports that involve online enticement and related material.
Research from the nonprofit Thorn finds that platforms such as Snapchat are frequently cited by minors as places where online sexual interactions occur. Those national patterns line up with what local investigators say happened in this Morgan Hill case.
Police Ask the Public to Come Forward
The Morgan Hill Police Department is asking anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Sgt. Sean Bayard at (408) 607-3032 or [email protected], as noted in the department’s post. Families who are worried about a child’s online contacts are encouraged to preserve any messages and report suspected exploitation to local law enforcement or to national reporting resources.
Police stressed that these cases are sensitive and that an arrest is an allegation, not a conviction. Anyone with tips can refer to the department’s social media post for more details on how to help the investigation.
