A 52-year-old Menlo Park man died at Stanford Hospital on Thursday, hours after he was assaulted near University Avenue in East Palo Alto, according to police. The suspect, whose name has been withheld by investigators, was arrested that same afternoon and booked into San Mateo County Jail on charges of assault resulting in great bodily injury and a parole violation. The killing ends what had been the longest stretch without a homicide in East Palo Alto in years.
According to Palo Alto Online, officers responded at about 2:21 p.m. Thursday to reports of a man acting erratically and disrobing in public in the 2300 block of University Avenue near Runnymede Street. When police arrived, they found the Menlo Park resident, who reported that he had been assaulted and identified the man responsible. He was taken to Stanford Hospital for treatment of significant facial injuries. East Palo Alto police detained the suspect later that afternoon, and the hospital notified the department at about 5 p.m. that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.
A Corridor With a Troubled Recent History
The stretch of University Avenue where the assault occurred is a busy commercial and residential corridor that includes University Senior, a 41-unit affordable senior housing project whose construction was expected to be completed in early 2017, according to HEART of San Mateo County. The area is in East Palo Alto. It's also not far from the 700 block of Runnemede Street, where a 41-year-old resident was injured in an April shooting.
The suspect was booked on a parole violation in addition to the initial assault charges.
Charges Likely to Be Upgraded
Under California law, felony assault causing great bodily injury is typically charged first under Penal Code section 245 or 12022.7. Penal Code 187 covers both first- and second-degree murder, according to the Shouse Law Group. It remains unclear exactly when the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office will formally amend the charges against the suspect, and police have not released his identity or explained his relationship, if any, to the victim.
East Palo Alto police said the investigation is active and that they plan to release more details as they become available, the Palo Alto Online report notes. The suspect was booked into San Mateo County Jail, according to the report.
Breaking a Rare Stretch of Safety
The death marks East Palo Alto's first homicide since April 2024, according to reports. Before Thursday's assault, East Palo Alto had gone all of 2025 and 2023 without a single homicide, according to CBS News.
That streak stood in sharp contrast to East Palo Alto's history. In 1992, the city recorded 42 homicides among roughly 24,000 residents, giving it the highest per-capita murder rate in the country and the grim national label of murder capital, per the County of San Mateo. The city has since undergone major changes, including shifts in policing and economic development, CBS News reported. East Palo Alto Police Chief Jeff Liu has been involved with automated license plate readers and ShotSpotter acoustic detection.
A 41-year-old resident was injured in an April shooting on Runnemede Street. Thursday's killing underscores that violent crime challenges persist even as the city's overall homicide numbers have fallen dramatically from their 1990s peak.
