Before sunrise in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday, a busy beachbound intersection turned into a crime scene after a person was found dead at Sunrise Boulevard and A1A. The body was covered by a tarp as officers blocked off traffic and began piecing together what happened. A skateboard lay nearby on the pavement while bystanders filmed a heavy police response, but investigators kept quiet about how the person died.
According to WSVN, cameras captured a strong police presence at the intersection and officers urged drivers to use alternate routes while detectives combed through the area. The station's footage showed the tarp-covered body and the skateboard in the roadway, and WSVN reported that police were not yet releasing further details as the investigation continued.
CBS Miami also aired video from the scene, reporting that Fort Lauderdale's traffic homicide unit responded to a crash involving a pedestrian at about 4:02 a.m. The station said the body was found near Northwest Eighth Avenue and East Sunrise Boulevard and that investigators were treating the incident as a death investigation.
Sunrise Corridor Safety Concerns
Sunrise Boulevard is a busy east-west artery through Fort Lauderdale with a track record of pedestrian and bicycle crashes. A corridor study from the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization documents multiple pedestrian injuries and several fatalities along stretches of Sunrise and flags issues such as missing crosswalks, narrow sidewalks and frequent mid-block crossings. Taken together, those conditions help explain why serious crashes on Sunrise often draw a rapid, large-scale response from traffic homicide teams and city crews.
What Investigators Say And Next Steps
So far, investigators are keeping specifics close while they process the scene and canvass for witnesses. CBS Miami reported that Fort Lauderdale's traffic homicide unit is leading the case, and WSVN noted that drivers were being asked to stay away from the area and find other ways around. Officials have not said whether the death resulted from a vehicle strike, a fall, or some other cause.
Hoodline will update this post as Fort Lauderdale Police release more information. For now, motorists heading toward the beach should expect delays near Seabreeze and A1A until the intersection is fully reopened.
