A naked man is accused of turning a quiet Morrow neighborhood into a weekend crime scene after police say he stole a handgun from a pickup truck, tried to carjack a homeowner at gunpoint, then holed up inside a nearby house before officers took him into custody. The homeowner ran from the confrontation and was not injured, according to police, and the suspect was later arrested with help from the Clayton County Sheriff's Department SWAT team.
Atlanta News First reports that the chaos started around 5 p.m. Saturday in the 6000 block of Graceland Circle, where the suspect allegedly grabbed a 9mm Ruger from a Toyota Tacoma parked in a driveway. From there, police say he walked over to nearby Oakridge Drive, pointed the gun at a resident and tried to take that person's vehicle.
Officers identified the suspect as Christopher Wayne Monroe. During the confrontation on Oakridge Drive, police say Monroe went into an unoccupied home.
Police response and arrest
Morrow officers called in tactical support from the Clayton County Sheriff's Department SWAT team as the situation escalated into a barricade, according to Atlanta News First. Police said officers were ultimately able to get inside the house and arrest Monroe.
According to the same report, officers recovered the handgun at the scene and took Monroe into custody.
Possible charges under Georgia law
Under Georgia law, taking or attempting to take a motor vehicle by force falls under the state's motor vehicle hijacking statute, O.C.G.A. § 16-5-44.1. Theft or unlawful taking of a firearm can bring separate felony exposure.
Penalties for motor vehicle hijacking and related weapons offenses can be severe, and any potential sentence would depend on how prosecutors decide to charge the case and whether the suspect has a prior record.
How to share tips with police
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Morrow Police Department. The department lists a nonemergency line and an online tip form on its website. According to the city's police page, the main number is 770-961-4006, and residents should call 911 for emergencies.
