A suspicious bag outside the Berrien County Health Department in Nashville triggered a scare and brief evacuation Thursday, but the city says it all ended with relief and a clean sweep.

According to City Manager Hayden Hancock, emergency crews moved in quickly after the item was reported and cleared nearby buildings as a precaution. The bag was searched and turned out not to contain any explosive device, and normal activity on the block came back online soon after. The bomb squad from Moody Air Force Base was called in to check the object as an added safeguard.

As reported by WALB, Hancock said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation helped clear the scene. “There was no threat to the public,” Hancock said in a city statement, crediting first responders for their fast, coordinated response and thanking residents for staying patient and following instructions while the search was underway.

Where It Happened

The bag was reported outside the Berrien County Health Department, a South Health District office that provides local immunizations and other public-health services. The department’s site lists the office at 600-A South Jefferson Street in Nashville, according to South Health District.

School And Community Response

Students at the nearby Head Start site were released and picked up by their parents after the precautionary evacuation, with officials emphasizing that everyone was kept safe throughout the incident, as reported by WALB. Authorities reported no injuries, and once the search wrapped up, the area quickly returned to regular routines.

City officials asked residents to stay calm while the sweep was conducted, stressing that the precautions were taken out of an abundance of caution while crews did their work.

Why Military EOD Teams Are Sometimes Called

Local law enforcement occasionally calls in military Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams for suspicious items, especially when there are questions about munitions or unfamiliar devices. Joint Base Langley-Eustis notes that Air Force EOD units from bases across the East Coast, including Moody Air Force Base, train together to standardize how they handle these situations and to support civilian agencies when requested. That kind of coordination is typically precautionary and focused on clearing scenes safely so communities can get back to normal as quickly as possible.
