Drivers cruising into Raleigh's North Hills now have one more thing to remember before they shop or grab dinner: register your car or risk a $35 surprise on the windshield.
Kane Realty has been rolling out a new plate-based parking system since last September in select districts, and the company says it is expanding the rules to more lots this month as the property gears up for more development and heavier traffic. The system is run by Power Parking and targets several lots and street-level spots where unregistered vehicles can receive a $35 notice.
According to The News & Observer, the setup gives visitors three hours of complimentary parking as long as they register. QR-code signs throughout the property prompt drivers to enter their license plate numbers, and the requirement already covers the North Hills Innovation District, the Bank of America Tower and some street-level Park District spaces. Where registration applies
Local coverage notes that enforcement first appeared in September and is now active in the Innovation District and parts of the Park District. ABC11 reports that Kane Realty has confirmed Captrust Tower at 4208 Six Forks Road will be added this month. Office tenants, residents and retail employees will keep their assigned parking privileges, the company says, while visitors using the shared spaces are subject to the new registration rules.
How to register and contest a ticket
Drivers can register by scanning the QR codes posted on signs and following the prompts. For anyone without a smartphone, Power Parking lists an alternative: call the company at (919) 375-6999 to register by phone, according to Power Parking. The company processes payments and works with enforcement partners under the new system.
If you do receive a notice, the citation includes instructions on how to pay or appeal. There is a 30-day window to dispute a “notice of noncompliance,” and unpaid notices can be sent to collections or lead to towing or booting, The News & Observer reported.
Why now: growth and parking pressure
Kane Realty says the changes are intended to keep short-term spaces turning over for shoppers and diners as North Hills grows denser. Not everyone is thrilled with the shift, and some visitors and neighbors have criticized the added step and the $35 hit for those who miss it.
The timing dovetails with a Raleigh City Council vote earlier this year that cleared the way for taller towers, up to 37 stories in parts of North Hills. That rezoning, which local outlets warned will increase parking demand and strain existing infrastructure, has raised questions about how the district will handle traffic in the years ahead.
