Gunfire in the overnight quiet along Freedom Drive sent one person to the hospital with life-threatening injuries early today, according to officials in west Charlotte.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m., local medics said, and the victim was rushed from the scene to a nearby hospital. Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded and began working to piece together what unfolded in the dark hours before dawn.
As reported by WCNC, MEDIC confirmed the time of the call and that one person suffered life-threatening injuries. WCNC's initial bulletin, posted early Saturday, did not include any information about a suspect or arrests. Officials have not released the victim's name or additional medical details beyond MEDIC's assessment.
Police Response and Neighborhood Concerns
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said investigators were on scene collecting evidence and speaking with people who might have seen or heard something. Detectives worked the area as neighbors woke up to another heavy police presence in west Charlotte.
The neighborhood has seen multiple shootings in recent months, a pattern that has residents frustrated and on edge, as reported by WSOC. Local leaders have previously called for a mix of targeted policing and stronger social supports in an effort to break the cycle of recurring violence.
How to Help Investigators
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has security or cellphone video from the Freedom Drive area around the time of the incident to contact investigators. Tips can be submitted through Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department channels, and people can also monitor official updates and contact details on the CMPD Newsroom.
Detectives had not released a suspect description in initial reports, and details remained limited early Saturday. Authorities say they will share more information as the investigation moves forward and continue to urge anyone with knowledge of what happened to come forward.
