Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice told reporters Sunday that captain Aleksander Barkov will not suit up again this season, closing the book on what had quietly become a marathon rehab. Barkov tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee during training camp and underwent reconstructive surgery on Sept. 26, 2025, according to NHL.com.
Maurice's update comes as Florida, already all but mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, grinds through the final stretch of the regular season, per Miami Herald reporting. Team medical staff had initially mapped out a seven to nine month recovery window for their captain, NHL.com noted when the injury was first announced.
Rehab Steps in Fort Lauderdale
For fans, the first real glimmer of hope came in late January, when Barkov was spotted taking carefully scripted laps at the Panthers' Baptist Health IcePlex in Fort Lauderdale. He skated solo and worked through individual drills in those early sessions, with everything labeled strictly non-contact and tightly controlled as he rebuilt mobility and strength, according to Florida Hockey Now.
What It Means for the Panthers' Roster and Cap
Before Maurice shut down any talk of a late-season comeback, the organization had been weighing two unappealing options: hold out hope for a last-minute return or move Barkov to season-ending injured reserve to free up cap space. That IR designation would have opened up meaningful salary room for the final weeks of the schedule, a possibility that team officials and analysts discussed publicly, as reported by Sports Illustrated. The league slate has Florida's last regular season game on April 15, NHL.com shows.
Barkov's Outlook
Through it all, Barkov has tried to keep the tone upbeat. He told team staff in late February that he was encouraged by how the rehab was tracking, according to the Miami Herald. For now, though, the Panthers will finish the season without their captain while the medical team and front office shift their focus to setting a clean timeline for next year and sorting out short-term roster patches around a very large Barkov-sized hole in the lineup.
