A late-night crash at a Pasadena intersection left one rider dead and a teenager fighting for life on Monday after a pickup truck collided with two small two-wheeled vehicles, authorities said. The violent collision unfolded around 8:50 p.m. at San Jacinto Street and Queens Street, according to initial reports.
Crash scene and timing
The wreck happened about 8:50 p.m. at the intersection of San Jacinto Street and Queens Street and involved a pickup truck and two riders on what investigators at the scene believed were mopeds or electric bikes, according to Click2Houston. Video captured near the scene showed one victim lying beside the pickup, covered by a white sheet, the outlet reported.
Victims and response
Witnesses told reporters the rider who died appeared to be a man in his 30s and that he was pronounced dead at the scene. A second rider, described as “believed to be a young teenager,” was critically hurt and “transported by Life Flight to a nearby hospital,” the Click2Houston report stated. Officials had not released any further information about the pickup driver’s condition in early reports.
How Texas law treats mopeds and e-bikes
Texas law draws specific lines between bicycles, mopeds and motor-assisted scooters, based largely on motor size and top speed. Those definitions affect requirements such as helmets, licensing and where the vehicles are allowed to operate. Chapter 541 and Chapter 551 of the Texas Transportation Code spell out those categories and give local governments room to regulate motor-assisted scooters on particular roads or sidewalks.
Investigation ongoing
Pasadena police are investigating the collision and had not released additional details in the initial aftermath of the crash. Hoodline will update this story if the Pasadena Police Department or other officials provide more information.
