Three Kearns schools, Kearns Junior High, West Kearns Elementary and Gourley Elementary, briefly went into secure protocol on Tuesday after heavy police activity in the surrounding neighborhood, according to Granite School District. Staff locked exterior doors and kept students inside while officers worked nearby, a precaution officials described as an "abundance of caution" as lessons carried on inside.
Secure Protocol: Doors Locked, School Day Stays On Track
Law enforcement asked the schools to shift into secure protocol, Granite School District told KSL TV. Under that protocol, the district said, "the doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building." Families were urged to stay away from campus until officers finished their work in the area, and officials emphasized there was no immediate threat to the school buildings themselves.
Inside The Buildings, It Was Business As Usual
Granite School District leans on its websites to push out emergency notifications and school contact information when situations like this unfold. As shown on Kearns Junior High's site, the district routes alerts and posts school phone numbers and safety resources for families looking for updates. Administrators said teachers kept instruction rolling in their classrooms while officers handled the activity outside.
District Has Used The Same Playbook Before
This was not the first time Granite schools have gone into secure protocol because of police activity off campus. Similar lockouts followed a February shooting that briefly placed several Granite schools on secure status, with exterior doors locked, classes continuing and the protocol lifted once officers gave the all clear, according to FOX13. District officials say the approach is designed to keep kids safe while avoiding major disruption to the school day.
Parents Urged To Hit Refresh, Not The Road
Granite officials said updates would go out through district and school websites and asked parents to monitor those official channels rather than heading to campus during an active response. For school-specific details, including hours and a main office phone number, families can check Gourley Elementary's site. Parents with immediate questions were told to call the school office instead of showing up while police were on scene.
