A 29-year-old man accused in a late-night porch shooting that killed one man and wounded three others in Summit Township is now back in Jackson County, where he was arraigned today after extradition from West Virginia. Court records show Dion Jamel Flowers Jr. is being held without bond on a murder charge, multiple attempted-murder counts and weapons offenses.
Arrest in West Virginia
Flowers’ arrest capped a months-long, multi-state search. He was taken into custody at a residence in Morgantown last Monday, according to WV News. The operation, which ended without incident, was carried out by the U.S. Marshals Mountain State Fugitive Task Force with help from the West Virginia State Police, the outlet reported.
Arraignment and Charges
After his capture, Flowers was extradited to Michigan and arraigned in Jackson County District Court, according to MLive. He faces one count of open murder, three counts of attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and a charge of using a firearm to commit a felony. Court records indicate he remains in the Jackson County Jail without bond and is scheduled to appear again before District Judge Allison Bates on March 20.
What Happened in May
The charges stem from a shooting shortly after midnight on May 17, 2025, when three people allegedly walked up to a home in the 100 block of Lincoln Court and opened fire on people gathered on the front porch, according to WILX. Authorities say 44-year-old Anthony Owens Jr. died from his injuries, while three other men — Kenneth Avant, 63; Randall Hurst, 44; and Michael Gant, 42 — were taken to Henry Ford Jackson for treatment.
Co-Defendants and Manhunt
Flowers is the third suspect arrested in the case. Two co-defendants, 28-year-old Tyrek Tra-Quan Jabrie Rice and 27-year-old Montez Martees White, were found and arrested in Ohio and are awaiting extradition to Michigan to face the same slate of charges, WKHM reports. Authorities credited a coordinated effort among multiple agencies, including the U.S. Marshals and local deputies, for tracking down all three suspects.
Prosecutor's Comments and Next Steps
Jackson County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Nathan Hull told MLive that prosecutors allege the defendants shot innocent people on the porch and said the office intends to pursue the case aggressively. Pretrial hearings and probable-cause proceedings are expected to unfold in the coming weeks as extradition and additional court dates are arranged for all three defendants.
Community Response
Undersheriff Anthony Stewart has praised detectives and partner agencies for their persistence in the case and said officials hope the arrests bring some measure of relief to the victims' families, according to local reporting. Authorities are still encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Kelley Ebersole at 517-768-7932 or the U.S. Marshals tip line.
