The Oregon Humane Society (OHS) has taken in 21 dogs and cats after Lake County deputies served a search warrant at a Christmas Valley property this week in what officials are calling a suspected animal neglect case. Responders also found several small animals on site and, in a grim discovery, multiple deceased pets.

What crews recovered and where the animals went

According to KPTV, OHS teams found 17 dogs and four cats living in filthy conditions without access to food or water. Five birds and two gerbils recovered from the property were sent to the Humane Society of North Lake County, while the dogs and cats were transported to OHS’s Portland campus for medical evaluations and behavior assessments before any adoption calls are made.

A second call for help in less than two months

This is the second time in under two months that OHS has been called in to help the Lake County Sheriff’s Office with a suspected neglect investigation. In a February update, the Oregon Humane Society detailed a Feb. 5 operation in Christmas Valley that removed 17 dogs and six cats and required emergency medical transports along with forensic necropsies for several deceased puppies. Since that response, OHS staff have been coordinating ongoing care across multiple shelters.

Agencies credit interagency teamwork

Lake County Sheriff Daniel Tague credited the multi-agency effort for making the latest case possible, saying, “Cases like this are only successful through strong teamwork, coordination, and cooperation among partner agencies,” as reported by KPTV. Deputies carried out the search warrant and worked alongside humane-law enforcement officers and local veterinarians to get the animals urgent care.

What comes next

OHS reports that the newly rescued dogs and cats are not yet available for adoption while they undergo medical treatment and behavior evaluations. The shelter says it will share updates on their status on the organization’s website and in its rescue notices. Local volunteers and the Humane Society of North Lake County are helping care for the birds and gerbils, and OHS is asking the public to monitor its news page for upcoming information on fostering opportunities, donations, and timelines.
