An early Friday crash on a busy stretch of U.S. Highway 183 in northwest Austin left a pedestrian dead and shut down southbound lanes near Anderson Mill Road, according to police. Emergency crews closed the southbound mainlanes at the Anderson Mill interchange for several hours while investigators worked the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.
According to KVUE, the person was crossing in the 13000 block of North U.S. 183 when they were hit by a vehicle and later pronounced dead. The station reports the driver stayed at the scene and is being tested for possible intoxication while detectives continue their investigation.
Where it happened and traffic context
The Anderson Mill interchange is a well-known commuter choke point on northwest Austin’s U.S. 183 corridor and has been the focus of safety work and lane changes in recent years. The City of Austin launched an $8 million project to add sidewalks, a center turn lane, and other pedestrian upgrades along Anderson Mill Road where it meets U.S. 183, according to Community Impact. The wider 183 North Mobility Project also lists ongoing frontage road and sidewalk work across the corridor into 2026 that can affect lane patterns and bring temporary closures.
Investigation
Austin Police Department vehicular homicide detectives responded to the scene and are leading the investigation. KVUE reports that officers were conducting impairment testing on the driver and that TxDOT alerts showed southbound U.S. 183 at Anderson Mill was closed starting around 5 a.m.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Austin Police Department’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111, a number the city lists for fatal collision tips per the City of Austin. This is a developing story and will be updated as officials release more details.
