A fast-moving fire tore through a single-story apartment building on the 1300 block of Campbellton Road SW early Monday, forcing several families out of their homes as Atlanta firefighters raced to keep the flames from chewing through the entire complex. Crews searched the building and reported that everyone inside was accounted for and that no injuries had been reported. City officials said structural assessments are still underway to determine just how bad the damage is.
According to a release sent to FOX 5 Atlanta, Atlanta Fire Rescue units launched what they called an "offensive attack," stretching hose lines and conducting searches after finding that the fire had pushed into the attic space over several apartments. Crews worked to stop the flames from spreading farther while methodically checking the rest of the building to be sure the fire had not extended into additional units.
Red Cross And Local Relief On The Ground
Families forced out by the blaze are getting help from local relief organizations. The American Red Cross of Georgia has disaster teams that step in after fires to provide temporary shelter, meals and recovery casework for affected households. Details on those services are available on the American Red Cross of Georgia site.
Campbellton Corridor No Stranger To Apartment Fires
Neighbors along Campbellton Road know all too well how quickly an apartment fire can upend lives. In July 2022, a southwest Atlanta apartment fire on the same corridor displaced at least eight families and was later ruled arson, according to reporting by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That incident highlighted how flames in an attic can rapidly multiply both property damage and the number of people forced from their homes.
What Comes Next For Displaced Residents
Officials have not yet released an exact count of how many people were displaced by Monday's fire, and the cause remains under investigation. City agencies and relief groups are expected to share more information as damage assessments move forward. Residents dealing with immediate needs related to the incident can reach out to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department for assistance.
