An early-morning burst of gunfire in east Fort Worth left one person dead today and five others detained as police scrambled to track a suspect vehicle.
Officers were called around 2:09 a.m. to the 2000 block of East Long Avenue, where they found a person who had been fatally shot, according to Fort Worth police. Witnesses at the scene gave officers a description of a vehicle connected to the shooting, and a short time later, police located a car with five people inside and detained everyone in it.
Investigators have not said whether any of the five will ultimately be arrested or charged. Police said they are still working to confirm exactly what role, if any, each person in the vehicle may have played.
The Tarrant County medical examiner's office is expected to publicly identify the person who was killed, according to The Dallas Morning News.
The deadly shooting lands on top of what has already been a rough stretch of gun violence in Fort Worth. Earlier this month, Hoodline detailed at least eight shootings reported across the city on March 2, a day when officers were juggling multiple scenes at once. East Fort Worth has repeatedly turned up in those incident logs this winter, and city leaders have been pressed to boost tips and camera-sharing efforts with detectives.
Investigation Underway
Police said investigators stayed on scene through Sunday morning, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Detectives are expected to release more information as they confirm identities and piece together a clearer timeline of what happened.
Officials have not released the names or conditions of the five people who were detained, according to The Dallas Morning News. Police are asking anyone who was in the area, or who has video from the time of the shooting, to get in touch with investigators.
What We Still Do Not Know
Several key details remain under wraps. Officials have not released the victim's name, have not given a possible motive, and have not said whether any formal charges are imminent.
Anyone with information or footage related to the shooting is urged to contact Fort Worth Police or Tarrant County Crime Stoppers, local coverage says. This story will be updated as authorities release additional details.
