A 42-year-old man was critically wounded early Sunday when gunmen in a passing car opened fire on his vehicle in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, according to police. The attack unfolded in the 2300 block of South Kedzie Avenue, where a gray sedan pulled up alongside his car and the occupants opened fire, striking him once in each leg. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
What police say
The shooting happened at 4:57 a.m., when the man was driving in the 2300 block of South Kedzie and his vehicle was approached by a gray sedan, whose unknown occupants started shooting, CBS Chicago reported. Harrison Area detectives responded to the scene to investigate. As of Sunday morning, police had not released any suspect descriptions.
A neighborhood with too many shootings
The attack is the latest in a string of serious shootings to rattle Little Village this year. Earlier in January, a man was shot in the head while driving, then crashed his vehicle, according to NBC Chicago. Residents and business owners say recurring drive-by incidents and bursts of daytime gunfire have kept nerves frayed and fueled demands for more patrols and stronger cooperation with investigators.
Police response
Following the pre-dawn attack, Harrison Area detectives canvassed the 2300 block of South Kedzie for evidence and potential witnesses. Investigators are urging anyone with surveillance video or information related to the shooting to contact detectives. No arrests had been reported in the hours after the gunfire, according to CBS Chicago.
The investigation remains active, and authorities said they plan to release more information as it becomes available. This story will be updated as police share additional details.
