A quiet stretch of South Los Angeles turned into a fatal crash scene early Wednesday when a motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a vehicle in the Florence neighborhood. The wreck happened just before 3 a.m., and emergency crews pronounced the rider dead at the scene. Officials did not immediately release the victim’s identity.
Los Angeles Police Department officers were called at approximately 2:57 a.m. to Florence Avenue and San Street, where they found the rider on the side of the road, an LAPD spokesman told City News Service, as reported by MyNewsLA. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim dead where they found him. Responders located the motorcycle several hundred feet away from the rider, and a shoe and the rider’s helmet were discovered nearby.
How Common This Is
Motorcyclists remain dramatically overrepresented in California traffic deaths. The California Office of Traffic Safety reports 583 motorcyclist fatalities in 2023, a 10.2% decrease from 2022 but still above pre-pandemic levels. Those statewide numbers highlight just how exposed riders are on busy city streets, especially in dense areas like South L.A., where heavy traffic and late-night movement can increase risk, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety.
Dangerous Corridors And Enforcement
Florence Avenue cuts through parts of South Los Angeles that city officials have previously flagged as hot spots for street takeovers and illegal racing. The Los Angeles City Council has directed LADOT and the LAPD to test both engineering fixes and stepped-up enforcement at problem intersections along Florence and nearby corridors, KNX News reports. Traffic investigators have cited speed, blocked or limited sight lines, and busy nighttime activity as recurring ingredients in serious and deadly crashes on these stretches.
Detectives with the LAPD’s South Traffic Division are investigating the collision. The division’s public contact page lists the detective desk at 323-421-2500 and the watch commander at 323-421-2577 for anyone with information, per the LAPD. Authorities have not released additional details about the crash or the victim.
