An early-morning crash on U.S. 287 brought north Fort Worth traffic to a standstill today, after a multi-vehicle collision near Blue Mound Road left one person dead and shut down the highway’s northbound lanes, officials said.
Emergency crews worked through the pre-dawn hours to clear the wreckage while investigators examined the scene and documented the crash.
According to WFAA, the collision was first reported around 2:57 a.m. and involved multiple vehicles. The outlet reports that Fort Worth police confirmed one person died at the scene.
Closure and traffic impact
The Texas Department of Transportation listed northbound U.S. 287 at Blue Mound Road as closed while crews removed vehicles and debris. Officials did not immediately provide an estimated time for reopening.
Drivers were urged to steer clear of the area and expect slowdowns on frontage roads and nearby surface streets as first responders worked the crash site and traffic spilled onto alternate routes.
Investigation underway
In a statement, the Fort Worth Police Department said investigators remained on scene to determine how the crash occurred. The identity of the person who died had not yet been released.
Police asked anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has dash-cam video from the area around the time of the crash to contact investigators.
Why this stretch matters
U.S. 287 is a busy corridor through north Fort Worth that carries both commuter and freight traffic. Crashes here often spill over onto neighborhood streets and frontage roads, snarling traffic well beyond the main lanes.
Regional planning data from the North Central Texas Council of Governments show heavy volumes along this route, which is why quick clearance is so critical to reduce the risk of secondary crashes and long backups.
The Fort Worth Police Department again urged anyone with information about the crash to reach out to investigators or use the department’s tip line. This story will be updated as officials release additional details and as roadways reopen.
