An off-duty Dallas Independent School District police officer was critically wounded this morning after a suspect he had just taken into custody opened fire near a Walmart Supercenter in northwest Dallas, according to officials. Dallas Fire-Rescue was dispatched around 10:49 a.m. to a gunshot wound call at the store in the 4100 block of Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway, with more than a dozen Dallas police units also responding to the scene.
The shooting unfolded at a retail plaza near Midway Road that houses both a Walmart Supercenter and a Sam's Club, according to WFAA. The Walmart location is identified as Store #2105 at 4122 LBJ Freeway, positioned along Interstate 635 near the Dallas–Farmers Branch border, per Walmart. A Dallas police spokesman said the officer involved in the shooting was not a member of the Dallas Police Department, according to The Dallas Morning News, which first reported that police calls for the incident were listed under “assist officer with ambulance.”
Fire department spokesman Jason Evans said one person was shot and taken to the hospital, though the wounded person's condition was not immediately known at the time of that initial report. Subsequent reporting identified the wounded officer as belonging to the Dallas ISD Police Department, and said he suffered critical injuries, according to FOX 4 News. Sources told the station that the officer was shot by a suspect he had already taken into custody near the store.
How an Off-Duty School Officer Ended Up Making an Arrest
The incident raises questions about how an off-duty Dallas ISD officer came to be arresting someone at a commercial retail center miles from any school campus. Under Articles 2.13 and 14.03 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, commissioned peace officers hold statewide authority, allowing them to make warrantless arrests for felonies or breaches of the peace even while off duty or outside their home jurisdiction, according to Texas statutes.
The Dallas ISD Police Department is not a small operation. An internal audit published in September 2025 showed the department employs more than 300 personnel, including armed officers certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement who carry full peace officer powers, separate from the municipal Dallas Police Department. The two agencies also operate under a formal memorandum of understanding, in place since 2008, that establishes jurisdictional boundaries and joint public information protocols for incidents that happen off school grounds.
Officer Rushed to Parkland, Investigation Ahead
The critically wounded officer was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas County's primary public Level I trauma center, according to sources cited by FOX 4 News. Under Dallas Police Department policy updated in April 2026, all officer-involved shootings within city limits are criminally investigated by DPD's Special Investigations Unit, followed by independent reviews from the Dallas County District Attorney's Office and the Office of Community Police Oversight, according to CBS News Texas. That process applies regardless of which agency employs the officer involved.
Thursday's shooting was not the only officer-involved incident Dallas police were handling that morning. FOX 4 News reported that a separate officer-involved shooting occurred in a North Dallas neighborhood around the same time, pulling multi-agency law enforcement resources to more than one critical scene simultaneously.
A Recurring Concern at Dallas-Area Retail Lots
Thursday's shooting adds to a string of firearm incidents that have unfolded at Dallas-area big-box retailers in recent months. Hoodline previously reported that a woman survived being shot seven times in the parking lot of a Dallas Walmart on Forest Lane. In April, a gun discharged inside a shopper's jacket at a Dallas Joe V's self-checkout, and in 2024, a fatal shooting outside a Frisco Walmart ended with a 22-year-old suspect taken into custody after a SWAT operation.
Details about the sequence of events leading up to today's gunfire, the suspect's current status, and the administrative review under the DPD–Dallas ISD memorandum remain unclear as investigators continue working the scene. Officials have not released further updates on the wounded officer's condition beyond confirming the injuries were critical.
