A quick stop for errands turned into a life-changing detour for Susan and David Grinder of the Point of Rocks area, after a routine visit to a Frederick Exxon turned a $5 scratch-off into a $50,000 win. The couple uncovered the top prize on a Winning Streak ticket and headed to Maryland Lottery headquarters on Monday to make it official. They told lottery officials they plan to funnel the unexpected windfall into home improvements. David had picked up several tickets during the errand run and only realized how big the win was after checking them at home.
According to Shore News Network, the lucky ticket came from the Exxon on Ballenger Creek Pike in Frederick. The station will collect a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winner. Before heading to Baltimore to claim the prize, the Grinders had the cashier scan the ticket at the store to confirm the win.
About the Winning Streak ticket
The $5 Winning Streak scratch-off debuted on Feb. 6 and launched with seven $50,000 top prizes, according to the Maryland Lottery. The game page also tracks prize counts and posts the odds, so players can see what prizes remain in circulation.
Shore News Network reports the Frederick win is the first $50,000 top prize claimed in the game. The couple said they plan to put the money toward home projects. At the Lottery's claims center, they wrapped up the paperwork, signed the necessary documents, and then collected their payout.
What winners should know
Players who hit larger Maryland Lottery prizes must schedule an appointment at the Maryland Lottery Claims Center in Baltimore and bring valid identification and any required documentation. The Maryland Lottery's appointment page outlines the process, available hours, and requirements. Anyone who believes they are holding a Winning Streak prize can consult the game's page or contact the Lottery directly for the latest prize counts and claiming instructions.
