Crews brought the blaze under control in about 45 minutes with no reported injuries, according to WRAL. The building is home to Helping Hand Mission, a long-running local nonprofit that provides food, clothing and shelter. The Raleigh Professional Fire Fighters Association later shared photos of the response and publicly praised crews for their work on the call.

According to the Raleigh Professional Fire Fighters Association, Engine 13 was first on scene and launched an interior attack on the fire. Ladder 1 and Rescue 16 followed, handling the primary search of the building and cutting vertical ventilation openings to let heat and smoke escape. The union noted that hoarding conditions inside the roughly 200-by-50-foot commercial structure complicated the operation and prompted a second alarm to bring in more manpower. Squad 7 set up the water supply and stretched a second hose line. WRAL reported the alarm came in around 6:30 a.m. at 623 Rock Quarry Road and that firefighters had the blaze under control in about 45 minutes, with no injuries reported.
Hoarding Raises The Stakes For Firefighters
When belongings are stacked floor to ceiling, they can hide ignition sources, trap heat and block both escape routes and firefighter access. Per the U.S. Fire Administration, hoarding conditions can obstruct exits and lengthen firefighting operations, which helps explain why extra personnel were requested on this call. Fire departments around the country say these hazards often force crews to adjust tactics and commit more people to searches and overhaul.
Helping Hand Mission Damage And Neighborhood Response
The Helping Hand Mission at 623 Rock Quarry Road, which offers food, clothing and shelter, sustained damage to donated items and inventory, Executive Director Sylvia Wiggins told WRAL. The outlet noted that volunteers had been bagging donations the day before the fire and that a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help the mission restock after the setback.

City investigators spent Sunday at the site working to determine the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage, while cleanup and recovery efforts got underway. Local 548 said it was proud to serve Raleigh residents and thanked firefighters for what it called "phenomenal work" on a tough early-morning call.
