A 30-year-old Ridgely man was killed, and two others were hurt Friday afternoon in a violent head-on collision between a car and a box truck on a rural stretch of Caroline County. The crash happened on Maryland Route 480 near Eveland Road and left one person dead at the scene and two people hospitalized.
How troopers say the crash unfolded
According to Maryland State Police, the wreck occurred just before 2 p.m. when an oncoming box truck crossed the center line. Investigators say the driver of a Kia tried to swerve away, but both vehicles ended up leaving the roadway and crashing off the shoulder. The Baltimore Sun reports that the Kia’s driver, 30-year-old Joseph Dsouza of Ridgely, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Passengers taken to area hospitals
The Kia’s passenger and the driver of the box truck were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries. Authorities have not released their names or updated conditions, as reported by WBALTV. Troopers stayed on the scene for hours, reconstructing the crash as they worked to piece together exactly what went wrong on the two-lane road.
Investigation and possible charges
Local reporting indicates that investigators are looking into whether impairment played a role and that criminal charges could follow, depending on what the probe turns up, according to WGMD. Maryland State Police have not released additional details while the investigation remains active.
