A quiet afternoon in Rockledge turned violent when a neurodivergent teenage girl fought off a man who police say broke into her home on Feb. 24, hitting him with a hammer before calling 911. Officers later identified the suspect as 29-year-old Brandon McCuen and took him into custody, with investigators reporting bloodstains inside the house and the case now in Brevard County court on multiple pending felony counts as prosecutors seek DNA evidence, according to local reports.
What police say
According to WESH, detectives responding around noon to the 911 call found the girl outside her home still holding the hammer. An arrest affidavit describes the suspect getting on top of her in a "push-up" position before she fought back. The document says the girl told investigators she managed to get on top of the man, grab a nearby hammer, and strike him once in the back of the head. Officers reported seeing bloodstains on the bedroom floor, on the bed, and in the dining area. A forensic interview at a children's advocacy center and a sexual-assault kit were noted in the arrest report, and a judge has ordered the defendant to submit DNA for testing, according to the station.
Suspect's account
In his interview with investigators, the suspect claimed he had met the girl at a gas station a few days earlier and that they began communicating through text and Snapchat, FOX 35 Orlando reports. McCuen told officers the two had sex on Feb. 23 and that he returned on Feb. 24 to watch TV, according to the affidavit. He said the girl then struck him with a hammer. When officers later went to a Rockledge residence to find him, he answered the door wearing a sweater that appeared to have blood on the hem, the report states.
