On July 4, Commerce City will lean all the way into rugby fever when DICK'S Sporting Goods Park turns into a mini international showdown as part of the city's free 4thFEST and fireworks. The holiday will open with a doubleheader between Zimbabwe and Tonga, then build to a headline clash featuring the USA Eagles against Portugal, a rare chance for local fans to see multiple international sides on one U.S. ticket.
The event was first reported by The Denver Post, which notes that the matches are locked in for July 4 at DICK'S Sporting Goods Park alongside Commerce City's free family festival and what is billed as the state's largest public fireworks display. According to the paper, tickets go on presale on April 7, with general sale opening April 9 at 10:00 a.m. City leaders are clearly on board. "Commerce City is incredibly excited for this new chapter of 4thFEST alongside the World Rugby Nations Cup," Mayor Steve Douglas told the outlet.
USA Rugby CEO Bill Goren framed the day as bigger than just one stop on the calendar. In a statement to The Denver Post, he said, "The World Rugby Nations Cup and these first three fixtures at home are excellent opportunities for our men's Eagles, and for USA fans to gather around them." The Commerce City date is part of a wider U.S. push to get the men's program more high-quality opposition ahead of 2027.
What the Nations Cup Means
As outlined by World Rugby, the Nations Cup is a new competition launching in July 2026 that will pit the 12 unions who qualified for the 2027 Rugby World Cup into two pools, with July fixtures staged across the Americas. The governing body says the format is designed to give those teams regular, meaningful tests and to build momentum toward Australia 2027, with Denver listed among the North American host cities.
How 4thFEST Will Fold In
According to the Colorado Rapids, 4thFEST is a free, family-friendly block party with live music, food trucks, kids' activities, and what the club promotes as the largest public fireworks show in Colorado. The Rapids' event hub also details a block party and pregame activations that open hours before kickoff, so the stadium area is expected to be buzzing early and fans are advised to plan around routing, parking and transit changes on match day.
With ticket presales and the general-sale window on deck, the calendar is finally catching up to the hype for what organizers are treating as a rare U.S. hosting of multiple international rugby sides on a single holiday. Between the family festival, one of the state's biggest fireworks shows and international rugby on home soil, July 4 at DSGP is shaping up as one of Commerce City's marquee event days this summer.
