Johnny Leon Wilson’s long-running murder case reached its conclusion Thursday when a Harris County judge sentenced the Houston man to 39 years in prison for the 2018 killing of his estranged wife, Charine Young Wilson. The punishment caps a six-year saga that began after Charine disappeared following a visit to her ex-husband’s apartment near Hobby Airport, as reported by the Houston Police Department.
What investigators say happened
According to the Houston Police Department, Charine was last seen on November 10, 2018, entering Wilson’s apartment at 8950 Glencrest Street. Her 11-year-old son later told investigators he had ridden with his mother to the unit and that Wilson left without her.
Surveillance video and a subsequent criminal complaint showed Wilson leaving the apartment with what appeared to be a large bundle wrapped in sheets, and officers reported finding blood and signs that a body had been dragged across the apartment floor, according to the same release. Deputies later discovered Charine’s remains along SE 1190A near Richland on December 12, 2018; KXXV reported that the Navarro County medical examiner determined she had been shot multiple times and that her body was covered in vegetation.
Fugitive years and capture
Court records show Wilson was arrested in Las Vegas in February 2019 while using an alias and was brought back to Harris County, where he was released on bond in February 2020. He later failed to appear for a scheduled 2023 trial date and removed his ankle monitor, prompting authorities to label him a fugitive and place him on high-priority wanted lists. His case was featured in a 2024 episode of “In Pursuit With John Walsh,” according to ABC13.
Authorities say tips to Texas Crime Stoppers eventually led investigators to Grand Prairie, where members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force and the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force arrested Wilson in December 2024, according to Click2Houston. He was captured after years on the run.
Plea and sentence
Wilson pleaded guilty to murder in November and received a 39-year sentence at the Harris County Criminal Justice Center. The Houston Chronicle reports that Wilson, 55, had faced the possibility of life in prison before agreeing to the plea deal.
Authorities say interagency work closed the case
Prosecutors and police credited interagency cooperation, public tips and task force work with bringing Wilson back into custody and resolving the long-running investigation, according to a City of Houston news release. Court records show Wilson was prosecuted in the 263rd State District Court; prosecutors did not immediately respond to requests for additional comment.
