A 20-year-old man was killed early Monday when his Corvette shot off the southbound lanes of Interstate 37 in San Antonio, sliced through a guardrail, and tumbled down an embankment onto a nearby access ramp. A woman riding in the sports car survived and was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
San Antonio police said the wreck happened just after 2 a.m. when the driver lost control in the southbound lanes of I-37. The Corvette broke through a guard rail, went down the hill, and landed on the ramp to I-37 from Carolina. Emergency crews pronounced the driver dead at the scene, while the passenger received on-scene medical care. The victim’s identity had not been released as of the initial report, according to News 4 San Antonio.
Another deadly stretch of highway
San Antonio’s downtown interstates and ramps have seen several serious wrecks in recent weeks, underscoring how quickly high-speed ramps and multi-level connectors can turn deadly. A late-February crash on I-35 that dropped a vehicle from the upper deck and killed its driver led to lengthy lane closures and an ongoing investigation.
Investigation ongoing
SAPD’s traffic division is handling the I-37 investigation and has not yet said whether speed, impairment, or a medical issue might have been factors. Investigators are expected to review the vehicle, the crash scene, and any available video. The early details in this case came from responding officers, per News 4 San Antonio.
