San Francisco woke up cool and mostly clear near 50°F today, but the city is in for a spring warm-up. Skies will turn sunny, and temps will climb to around 72°F this afternoon, then push close to 77°F tomorrow. Coastal neighborhoods will hang onto a shallow marine layer and some morning fog, while inland valleys warm into the upper 70s.
Foggy Mornings, Sunny Afternoons
A shallow marine layer will cling to the immediate coast and drift north through the morning, keeping low clouds and patchy fog along the shoreline before clearing by midday, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will run about 10 to 15 degrees above normal this weekend, and some interior Central Coast spots could trend even warmer. Morning commutes near the water may see brief visibility reductions before the afternoon sun takes over.
Plan Outdoor Time Smartly
If you are trying to squeeze in weekend plans, mid-morning and late afternoon are your sweet spots when it will feel most comfortable around the city. The SFO area has only a low chance of stratus reaching airport approaches this morning, but shoreline ferry runs, and waterfront events should still keep one eye on the timing of the fog. Pack layers for coastal trips and bring extra water if you are heading inland, where it will feel noticeably warmer.
Boaters Should Mind Offshore Conditions
Offshore, things get a bit rougher. A Small Craft Advisory is posted through 3 p.m. PDT on Sunday for waters from Point Arena to Point Reyes, and mariners should take it seriously, per the National Weather Service. Seas are forecast to build later in the week, with significant wave heights expected to increase by late Thursday into Friday. If you are planning to head out, check with operators for schedule updates and make sure loose gear on board is tied down.
Next Week: Rain Returns
The warm ridge breaks early next week, and forecasters are calling for a return to wetter weather starting Tuesday. The better shot at light, steadier rain arrives Wednesday into Thursday. Rain totals are expected to stay on the lighter side for most of the Bay Area, with coastal mountains picking up the highest amounts. In other words, there is still just enough time to clear gutters and wrap up outdoor projects before the clouds move in. Keep an umbrella within reach and recheck the forecast the night before any outdoor plans.
