A mixed-up food order at northeast Portland’s Sandy Hut did not end with a comped plate or an apology. Prosecutors say it erupted into a full-on bar brawl last October, leaving a server with a broken jaw and eight fractured teeth and turning a neighborhood standby into a temporary crime scene.
According to court documents reported by KOIN, the suspects are identified as 30-year-old Marchelle Quiana Swafford, her mother, 49-year-old Nikiesha Monicks Young, and 54-year-old Daniel Jones Jr. Prosecutors allege all three face third-degree assault charges for attacking the bar’s security guard, while Swafford is also charged with first- and second-degree assault tied to the server’s injuries.
Investigators say the confrontation started when the group complained about a wrong food order and began yelling at the bartender. A security guard stepped in to escort them outside, where things allegedly got worse. One witness told police the trio were “wailing on him,” and court papers accuse Swafford of striking an employee in the mouth with a can of pepper spray, knocking him unconscious and leaving his jaw and multiple teeth fractured, as reported by KOIN.
Police say the three left before officers arrived and were not immediately identified. For roughly four months, the case sat without named suspects until detectives pulled together security-camera footage and other records, which are detailed in charging documents. Reporting in The Oregonian notes investigators also linked Jones and Young to an earlier shoplifting report and that Jones faces separate weapon-related charges from a December parking-lot incident.
Neighborhood Staple Turned Scene of a Serious Attack
The Sandy Hut, at 1430 NE Sandy Blvd, is a decades-old dive bar on the Sandy Boulevard strip, long known for cheap food, strong drinks, and the occasional live show. Local coverage has described it as a neighborhood fixture, which makes the October assault stand out for regulars and nearby businesses, according to Eater Portland.
Charges and Next Steps
Court filings show all three have pleaded not guilty and are out of custody while the cases move forward, according to reporting by KPTV. Swafford faces felony assault counts connected to the server’s injuries, Young is accused of an attempted class-C felony in the same incident, and Jones is also charged with unlawful-weapons allegations from the separate December episode. Prosecutors are pursuing the matters in Multnomah County court as pretrial proceedings continue.
Public reporting so far does not list trial dates in the filings that were reviewed, and investigators say the broader probe into the Sandy Hut incident is still active. Officials and the bar’s ownership have not been quoted in the charging coverage; the allegations described here are drawn from court records and the charging documents cited above.
