A welfare check in the Bouquet Canyon area of Santa Clarita transformed into a major narcotics bust on Saturday, after deputies say they found what looked a lot more like a drug deal than a medical emergency.
During the contact, deputies reported finding numerous small baggies, a digital scale, and what they described as a brick of suspected cocaine weighing roughly 954 grams. Investigators also recovered more than $10,000 in cash. The man, described by officials as being in his 40s, was taken into custody and booked at the local sheriff’s jail. According to the department, the arrest included an additional felony because the suspect has two prior convictions for narcotics sales.
According to a post by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, deputies responded to a report of a man passed out in a vehicle at Bouquet Canyon Road and Plum Canyon Road and quickly spotted what they say was sales-level narcotics activity. The post states that a brick of suspected cocaine was on the passenger floorboard and that deputies observed a scale and numerous small baggies. Officials say the suspect was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station jail on a felony possession-for-sale charge.
A pattern of large seizures in the valley
The arrest fits into a run of large narcotics recoveries in the Santa Clarita Valley over the past year. As reported in a February traffic stop bust, deputies recovered packaged doses during a Canyon Country stop. Local station KHTS reported that deputies recovered roughly 3,000 lethal doses of fentanyl during a September welfare check.
What deputies say they recovered
In Saturday’s incident, the department wrote on Facebook that a "brick of suspected cocaine" was found on the passenger floorboard, sitting alongside a digital scale and numerous small baggies. Deputies also reported recovering more than $10,000 in cash. The suspect, identified only as a man in his 40s, was arrested on a felony possession-for-sale charge, and officials say he was hit with an extra felony due to two prior narcotics-sales convictions.
Charges and legal implications
As explained by Shouse Law, possession-for-sale of cocaine is charged under Health & Safety Code §11351 and is a felony that can carry multiple years in prison, along with significant fines. Prior narcotics-sales convictions can factor into prosecutors' decisions to file additional felonies or to seek enhanced penalties at sentencing.
What comes next
The station's Facebook post provided the initial public account of the arrest; the department had not released a case number or additional documents as of publication. Anyone with information can contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station at (661) 260-4000, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department station page.
