Arizona State University is cranking up the pace on its new, fully air-conditioned indoor football practice facility in Tempe after landing a major donor, university leaders say. The expanded complex, going up near Mountain America Stadium, will feature large indoor turf fields and a sports-bar style fan zone designed for upgraded tailgating and events. Crews are already on site as ASU pushes to beat earlier projections for completion.
What the project will include
According to the Phoenix Business Journal, the project now carries an estimated $55 million price tag and is set to include more than 100,000 square feet of turf, a climate-controlled interior and a dedicated fan zone with a sports-bar feel. The design focuses on making the building usable year-round in the Valley heat, with flexible space that can flip between football practice and premium game-day activations.
Coach Kenny Dillingham had publicly gone hunting for a $20 million benefactor, and he later confirmed that a Valley-based donor stepped up with an eight-figure gift after that request. “We got somebody very close to that to help with the indoor (facility) already,” Dillingham said on Arizona Sports, as reported by Athlon Sports.
Earlier plan and updated scope
Earlier capital-planning documents had outlined a roughly $35 million practice building next to Mountain America Stadium and referenced converting nearby parking into turf as part of ASU's FY2027 capital-improvement plan, according to AZBEX. The larger budget and added bells and whistles now being reported suggest the university expanded the scope to include full climate control, more turf and dedicated fan areas.

The indoor practice facility is one piece of a wider athletics upgrade push that also features a proposed renovation of Desert Financial Arena, with both efforts aimed at boosting recruiting and the fan experience, per Cronkite News. ASU's capital plan laid out an aggressive schedule: design work was slated to begin in March 2026, with construction to follow in early 2027 and a February 2028 completion goal, according to AZBEX. Local reporting indicates crews are already moving some work forward on-site. The Phoenix Business Journal reports the university now expects substantial completion by spring 2028, with the donation allowing ASU to speed up procurement and early-build activities.
Athletic director Graham Rossini called the gift “an incredible commitment from a longtime ASU partner,” according to Athlon Sports. The university has not publicly identified the donor and officials say they plan to share more details as design work advances and key schedule milestones are hit.
