Allegheny County health inspectors shut down Eggheads Saloon, a Brookline bar at 1162 Brookline Boulevard, after finding an active sewage backup and a list of sanitation problems during a Tuesday inspection. Officials labeled the wastewater issue an imminent hazard and slapped a closure placard on the building. The bar has been told it will not reopen until sewer service is restored and the basement is fully disinfected.
What inspectors found
According to the county’s site report, inspectors cited an active sewage backup in the basement, a permanently blocked three-compartment sink, no probe thermometer, and evidence of smoking in a food-preparation area. They also noted missing cleaning and sanitizing supplies, pink residue in a soda-gun holster, damaged floor tiles, and signs of chronic, unattended backups. Those findings are detailed in the Allegheny County Health Department inspection report.
What the bar must do to reopen
Local reporting says the health department ordered Eggheads Saloon to restore sewer function, clear nonessential items out of the basement, and disinfect the entire area before reopening. Inspectors also required that the three-compartment sink be made accessible and that the operator agree to install a grease interceptor within six months. The agency will update its food-safety page once the closure is lifted, according to CBS Pittsburgh.
Enforcement and public-safety notes
The inspection report instructs operators not to "conceal, remove or cover" the bright closure placard and lists specific corrective steps that must be completed before the bar can reopen. Inspectors also flagged possible black mold and chronic moisture damage in the basement, raising the stakes for the cleanup. Patch reported that staff were walking through affected areas to access beverage supplies, underscoring the immediate public-safety concerns for customers and neighbors.
CBS Pittsburgh has also summarized the violations and the department’s reopening checklist, and will be a key source for updates on the bar’s status.
