Tuesday afternoon services were quiet at Ignite at The CrossRoad Church in Seymour, but the sanctuary still ended up with a visitor no one expected: a silver Toyota 4Runner that tore through the front of the building and came to rest among the pews, leaving heavy damage in its wake. Church leaders said no worshipers were inside when the vehicle hit, and first responders took the driver to a hospital.

How the crash unfolded

The Seymour Volunteer Fire Department said crews believe the driver suffered a medical emergency just before the vehicle broke through the sanctuary wall. When Pastor Brandon Hord arrived to survey the scene, the 4Runner was sitting in the middle of the worship space, according to WVLT.

Pastor rushed back and assessed damage

Hord said he was on his way to another church when someone called him with a blunt warning: "Do not come to my church. Go to your church. There's a car in your sanctuary." He turned around and hurried back, only to find the vehicle sitting where his congregation usually gathers to worship. He and his wife, Norah, told WVLT they are grateful no one was inside at the time and are working to repair the space before Sunday services, although Hord acknowledged that fixing the damage could take "weeks or months."

Repairs, insurance and fundraiser

The couple has launched a fundraiser to help cover repair costs. On GoFundMe, they wrote that while the church carries insurance, the policy will not cover everything, especially given that the building is "very old." Volunteers and staff quickly started boarding up openings and clearing debris as church leaders weigh how to fully restore the sanctuary.

Where the church is and what's next

Ignite International lists the CrossRoad campus at 5759 Sevierville Road in Seymour and shows regular Sunday service times there, a sign that leaders are aiming to get worshipers back on a familiar schedule as repairs move forward. Church members and nearby residents are being asked to pray and support the rebuilding effort while leaders coordinate cleanup, inspections, and long-term fixes.
